Creating, Finalizing, & Implementing

After hundreds of conversations with law enforcement officers across the country, I learned the two most common and biggest wellness hurdles for law enforcement are 1) knowing what wellness means and 2) finding time to implement it.

We have spent the last six parts of this series addressing the first hurdle, learning what wellness means.

Now it’s time to address the second hurdle, implement a 1-hour daily routine to develop the physical, spiritual and mental dimensions.

Finding Daily Success in One Hour a Day

You may feel like you don’t have an extra hour in your day. But don’t fret. It is a cumulative hour, not necessarily one whole hour in one sitting.

Plus, this still leaves you 161 hours in the week!

These are the ‘non-urgent but important’ tasks we discussed in Part 2 that are necessary to integrate wellness habits, ergo happiness, into your life.

Also, when you are able to consistently incorporate small bits of wellness training into your daily routines, you begin to reap the benefits. These benefits include expanding your feelings of “control” over your world and your happiness.

It also allows you to feel successful in little moments throughout the day. I call these micro-successes or daily victories. And who doesn’t want to feel successful or victorious, like the little guy in the image above?

Track your progress

Proactively and aggressively schedule your personal life and your wellness.

Use something tangible to track and “measure” the intangible.

Pick your tracking device. It could be a piece of paper, a calendar, or something on your phone. It doesn’t matter what it is but pick one because it is important to see the progression of everything you’re doing for yourself.

Wellness training activities are not felt as quickly as taking ibuprofen for a headache. While wellness activities are going to benefit you in the long run, I want you to be able to see and then feel the success of what you’re doing each day.

And that’s why it’s so vital that you have some way to track that.

Create and Implement Tiny Habits

Science shows that establishing tiny habits affects behavioral change. Atomic Habits by James Clear is an excellent book with lots of information and tips on creating new habits and tiny improvements each day.

What are tiny habits? A 1% change.

1% doesn’t feel hard, right?

If you do this each day, by the end of a year, you will have improved 365%!!!

Synergy

Doing anything in any area of wellness positively impacts all other areas of your wellness. It’s like having all spokes in a wheel or having all lug nuts on your tire tightened equally.

Do the Work!

What does a proper daily wellness routine look like? Practicing every day. Implementing 1% change each day in any of the following wellness areas:

  • Meditation
  • Exercise
  • Nutrition
  • Sleeping
  • Reading

There is NO shortcut to investing in yourself!!

It requires diligence.

Try it out!

You won’t know for sure until you try!

Keep up the good work!

You may be wondering if you have the time to implement more wellness in your life. I submit that you are already making the time because you are reading this article. Now all you have to do is transfer a wellness activity into this time slot, and bam!  Done. Success. Victory.
